Collection: Phil Brandon Hunter

Phil Brandon Hunter is a contemporary British artist whose diverse practice encompasses oils, acrylics, watercolours, pen and ink, and graphite. He is renowned for his evocative landscapes, seascapes, townscapes and abstract works, characterised by a rich, expressive use of colour, a strong sense of atmosphere, and an exceptional attention to detail.
Phil’s artistic journey began at Wallington County Grammar School in Surrey, where his talent for drawing first flourished, before he went on to study at Canterbury College of Art in Kent.
In the 1980s, Phil made his home in the village of Ffestiniog within Eryri (Snowdonia National Park), exhibiting his work at Oriel y Ddraig Gallery. Immersed in a landscape of ancient mountains, temperate rainforests, rugged coastlines and historic Welsh architecture, he developed a deep appreciation for the textures, forms and shifting qualities of natural light, elements that continue to define his artistic vision today.
This profound connection with the landscape extended to his travels throughout Provence and the Mediterranean coastline, where he often painted en plein air, carrying his oils, canvases and easel to secluded harbours, winding coastal paths and dramatic cliff tops, seeking to capture the atmosphere and spirit of each location.
Returning to South East England in the 1990s, Phil settled first in Beckley near Rye, where he established and curated the Hunter Gallery while continuing to exhibit his own work. Since 2000, he has lived and worked in Tenterden, Kent.
His work has been exhibited widely, including at Chequer Mead Arts Centre in East Grinstead, the Red Door Gallery in Rye, and the Saatchi Art Gallery on-line. Through decades of observation, travel and artistic exploration, Phil has developed a distinctive visual language that captures the beauty, atmosphere and emotional essence of the landscapes that that continually inspire him.
