The scene is Brixham Harbour. The painting is in two sections (a diptych), capturing the panoramic nature of the scene. To the left in the inner harbour can be seen the full-size replica of The Golden Hind, in which Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580, renaming her mid-voyage from its original name The Pelican.
