Polymer Photogravure Etching is a combination of photography and etching. A photographic image is exposed with UV light onto a steel plate prepared with a photo sensitive layer. The plate is then developed in water. The darker parts of the image which have received less exposure remain hard and the lighter parts which have received more exposure become softer. When it is developed in water, the parts of the image wash away according to how hard they are and the result is a relief plate which can then be inked in the traditional manner for etching and they are printed on paper using an etching press. As in the normal etching process, the artist can use many different types of ink and colours as well as a variety of papers to produce a unique result.
