'The Eagle Slayer' by John Bell, a striking sculpture encountered during a visit to the beautiful grounds of Hole Park Gardens, Cranbrook, Kent
The sculpture is inspired by one of Aesop’s fables, carrying a powerful message 'Unwittingly, we give to our adversaries the means of our own destruction'
According to the tale, the boy finds a feather dropped by the eagle and uses it to fashion an arrow, which he then uses to bring down the bird when it returns. A story of loss, revenge and unintended consequences, captured in a moment of dramatic stillness.
There is something timeless about the way sculpture brings movement, strength and emotion into a landscape, inviting us to pause and look a little closer. Art discovered in unexpected places, always inspiring.
Prints should never be placed in direct sunlight.
