Collection: Ruth Knight

Ruth is a Bristol-based potter creating one-off pieces and small collections of thrown and altered vessels.

Her practice explores the beauty found in decay, drawing inspiration from age, weathering and imperfection. These qualities inform the tactile, organic aesthetic of her work, where irregular surfaces, earthy textures and imperfect forms are embraced rather than concealed.

Inspired by the landscapes around her, Ruth collects wild clays, rocks, shells, wool and other natural materials, to bring elements of the surrounding environment into her practice. She experiments with incorporating these materials into slips and glazes, which are layered onto the surfaces of her vessels to create depth, texture and a sense of place.

Sustainability is also central to her practice. Ruth creates 'reclaim' glazes from leftover glaze materials and experiments with incorporating household waste products, including coffee grounds and wood ash, into her slips and glazes. Through this process, discarded and overlooked materials are given a new purpose.

Ruth's ceramic journey began with evening classes at The Kiln Rooms, London in 2021, before continuing at Eastbourne Studio Pottery after moving to Sussex in 2023. She now works from her home studio in Bristol, where she continues to explore the relationship between nature, place and the passing of time.
