Bio

Lu is a ceramic artist and calligrapher based in Rye, East Sussex. The combination of art and the written word have always been a passion, tied in to her 30+ year career as a creative in the advertising industry. As a Creative Director, visual cohesiveness between design and the written word was integral to her role, and it’s this experience she now brings to her work in ceramics.
Working mainly in wheel-thrown porcelain and inspired by her deep appreciation of Japanese ceramics, Lu’s mark-making is informed by Shodō, or Japanese calligraphy, in its various forms. These include the distinct, sharp angles of Kaisho, the highly abstract and flowing strokes of Sōsho, and the balanced uniformity and vertical lines of Tensho.
The pure white canvas of porcelain is another important factor in her work, exploring how this often difficult medium can be sculpted into a myriad of flowing forms and vessels that carry the messages inherent in her mark-making.

Artist Statement

Throwing on the wheel, particularly with a clay as capricious as ming porcelain, requires intense focus and a physical centredness - much the same as the practice of Shodō. You have to be absolutely present in the process. There really isn’t any room for intrusive thought or external stimuli. It’s an escape of sorts, which I find incredibly peaceful. I aim for calm and simplicity in the forms I produce, with a palette of colours that is deliberately limited, focusing on black, white and a bronze glaze that I make myself.
