Artist Statement
Sarah Cox creates vividly colourful, animated ceramics that blend elements of fantasy, realism, and escapism. Her inspiration draws deeply from the natural world, especially the mysteries of the ocean. While her early work was sparked by visits to the aquarium tanks at London Zoo and the tropical glasshouses of Kew Gardens, she is now a keen diver, sourcing ideas from the rich life of tropical seas and exotic, far-flung environments.
Recurring motifs in her work include bluebirds, aardvarks, dogs, elephants, and sea creatures, brought to life with humour, movement, and a distinct personal style. Sarah works in both small and large-scale sculpture, with each piece typically a one-off, although she revisits certain themes across collections. Her portfolio also includes anemone-inspired forms, mixed-media wall pieces, low reliefs, mirrors, and clocks.
Her palette is rich and expressive, spanning from white and yellow to orange, vivid red, lush greens, turquoise, deep cobalt, purples, and black.
More recently, Sarah has been developing a striking collection of large-scale stoneware pieces designed for outdoor spaces. These include sculptural installations, fountains, water features, and birdbaths, offering clients the opportunity to enjoy bold, vibrant ceramics in a garden setting. The shift in scale has presented new creative challenges and opportunities, particularly in adapting her glaze formulas to meet the demands of exterior work.
